This class will explore hand embroidery as a form of drawing with a focus on the characteristics of the individual mark and how one can artistically utilize and push the mark of the needle for their own artistic purposes. Through direct drawing, transfer and projection students will build technical skills and methodologies for idea development. Traditional drawing techniques such as contour, gesture and hatching will be addressed and considered in terms of application with embroidery. Students will learn basic-to-advanced embroidery techniques, including various stitches, appliqué techniques, and three-dimensional building of textiles. Bring an article of clothing you would like to repair or embellish.
